Online yoga courses are the need of the hour as the global pandemic scenario is the new normal.
Virtual Yoga teacher training are gaining ground with yoga alliance approving the online yoga teacher training formats for limited months (April to September 2020). Most of us wonder how virtual training can take care of yoga adjustments. Others wonder if virtual training are really worth it.
Here in this blog, we would like to share our experience of conducting 200 hrs online yoga teachers training and dealing with the YOGA ADJUSTMENTS tutorials:
24 days online yoga teacher training was conducted in the month of May with all the classes conducted live by our faculty. 180 minutes of yoga asana classes were conducted every day except Sundays.
Yoga philosophy and anatomy were conducted using presentations and 3D anatomy applications. It makes anatomy even more interesting and fun.
The way salamba yoga look at the art of adjusting the student’s body in yoga asanas is thoroughly anatomically oriented. Yoga adjustments are essentially movements and the purpose of any adjustment is to change the axial skeleton’s positioning so that the organic body can realign itself.
Having known the functional movements of different joints and how these movements are related with the axial skeleton (trunk region) it becomes easier to adjust and align the student’s bodies by bringing small changes in these joints.
Most of our alignment classes were synchronized with anatomy and yoga classes so as to render a practical understanding of adjustments. Yoga Students exhibited a deeper understanding of adjustment as an essential movement that is related to other parts of the body rather than a localized movement.
To elaborate in simple words adjustment of the spine in forwarding bends like Paschimotanasana was taught as an essential movement of the ribs and sternum rather than only a movement of the spine. Since ribs and sternum connect with the thoracic spine its more reasonable to pay attention to these areas for the movement of thorax.
Using a demonstrator to help with the yoga postures also had a huge impact on the learning of adjustments. The teaching of Self-usage of props in the form of walls, chairs, belts, hand towels, blankets, and corners of the walls promoted a lot of self-discovery in the asanas which became the basis of sound yoga adjustments as well.
Every Thursday of the week was reserved for the completion of exercises and revising the content covered. Students instructed asanas and pranayama every week according to the teaching principles taught during art of teaching discussions. Towards the end of the course our online yoga teacher training participants were able to conduct a class of 1 hr by themselves over zoom instructing other participants. The outcome has been encouraging and positive. In all, we can vouch for online yoga teacher courses as a relevant and easily accessible means of rendering and assimilating yoga asana basics and yogic studies.
